Reach out and Read San Diego Collaborative is working to help expand and sustain Reach out and Read (ROR) in San Diego by recruiting new sites, providing communication among existing sites, providing support with progress reports and book inventory, sending out trainers for ROR training of new staff and physicians and assisting with and coordinating fundraising for book money.

The Reach Out and Read San Diego Collaborative is pleased to announce that the First 5 Commission of San Diego County has funded capacity building and program development for the collaborative over the next 3 years. These "Responsive Funds" will enable the collaborative to expand ROR programs in San Diego and to provide administrative support to existing sites. As well, the funding will provide leverage funds to augment fund-raising efforts for all sites and help ensure sustainability in the years to come. In addition, some funding has been allocated for directly supplying books to sites. We are also excited about an intergenerational component to expand volunteers in Reach Out and Reach clinics through a collaboration with Aging and Independent Services and the San Diego County Library.

The mission of the First 5 Commission of San Diego County is "every child in San Diego County will enter school ready to learn" which complements the mission of ROR "to make literacy promotion a standard part of pediatric primary care, so that children grow up with books and a love of reading". We expect this mutually beneficial relationship to positively impact the children of San Diego County. Thank you to our physician champions who have been generously giving of their time to promote ROR in San Diego and bring this to fruition, especially: Dr. Bron Anders, Dr. Donald Miller, Dr. Ingrid Martinez- Andree, Dr. Amethyst Cureg, and Dr. Julianne North.

We hope that this is the first of many announcements of support for the ROR program in San Diego County that will benefit out sites in the county. Information regarding distribution of books and funding will be forthcoming, once the contractual arrangments are finalized.
