    Kids Count 2010 Special Report
Reading by the Third Grade Matters!

Recently the Annie E. Casey Foundation reported the alarming news that 68% of America's 4th graders scored below proficient on the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) reading test in 2009. The numbers are even more alarming here in California where 76% of our state's 4th graders scored below the reading proficient level. If these children remain behind their peers in reading proficiency, they are at greater risk for academic failure --- with associated problems such as juvenile delinquency, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy.

A key recommendation of the Annie E. Casey Foundation's report is to embed reading "in the agencies and institutions that work and interact with young children and families." As well, the report recommends the "establishment of medical homes and primary care practices that focus broadly on children's healthy development, building on exemplary programs such as Reach Out and Read." Click Here to read the full report.

Over 14 published research studies have shown that children who participate in Reach Out and Read with their pediatricians are more likely to be read to, to have books in their home, and start school with a 6 month head start in language and vocabulary. Over 65,000 families in San Diego served annually by Reach Out and Read are benefitting from the program locally - and those children will enter kindergarten better prepared to succeed.

    haiti Ti moun Annou li!
    "Children, Let's Read"

Ti moun Annou li!- "Children, Let's Read" is the translation of this Haitian Creole call to action, and is the name of a program just rolling out at two sites in Haiti to bring books to the children of that impoverished nation. Patterned after Reach Out and Read, this program has the goals of identifying, writing and publishing appropriate books and distributing these books with literacy guidance in health care settings.

In early 2009, a small group in San Diego led by Dr. Bron Anders, (Professor of Pediatrics at UCSD) began looking at ways to bring more books and improve literacy in Haiti- particularly to the rural areas of Haiti. Only one year later, a devastating earthquake hit the capital, Port au Prince, killing 230,000 people, leaving tens of thousands homeless and literally changing the living conditions of the entire country. With this backdrop, the efforts and excitement of "Ti Moun Annou Lí" began to coalesce into a multi-national, multi-disciplinary group that includes authors, illustrators, and publishers along with pediatric health professionals from the US and Haiti, including members of the Haitian Pediatric Society. In addition to the importance of reading and literacy to all children, it has become increasingly apparent that books can have a profound impact on healing, both physically and emotionally, for children who are victims of devastating events.

Through donations from individuals and publishers, small shipments of books have arrived at a general hospital and a clinic site caring for patients infected with HIV, including children. In these sites, healthcare workers are partnering with parents and caregivers to give these books to children and teach how they can be used to promote discussion and reading. Books in both French and Haitian Creole will be needed for all ages of children, including those in primary school. The collaborative group is looking at ways to buy and/or produce these books in Haiti as well as partnering with publishers in the US who would be willing to sell and ship the books at reduced rates. Currently, the AAP Chapter 3 has agreed to be an official sponsor of this new program and is in the process of fundraising to support a coordinator for the work of the program both here and in Haiti along with support for the purchasing and beginning of production of books that will supply the program. Future plans also include a number of volunteers going to Haiti to deliver books along with their work in healthcare and other humanitarian efforts, and also a group that plans to go as trainers for the healthcare workers that will be involved in implementing the program at the current and future sites. Additional sites being considered are camps, and community outreach programs that perform nutrition screening.

If you are interested in giving financial support to this exciting program, please go to www.rorsd.org and click on the donate tab to donate on-line or find out where you can send your tax-deductible donation.
