Reading if Fundamental Partners with RORSD Collaborative
Free Books for San Diego Sites
Reading is Fundamental (RIF) has partnered with
RORSD to provide over 30,000 books to children in
San Diego County at currently active ROR sites! RIF
prepares and motivates children to read by
partnering with organizations to
deliver free books and literacy resources to those
children and families who need them most. Founded
in 1966, RIF is the oldest and largest children's and
family nonprofit literacy organization in the United
States.
In the
next month ROR clinics in San Diego will receive new
books to distribute to children 6 months to 2 years
old. Books are
purchased through a matching grant from RIF; RORSD
Collaborative was able to provide the 25% match
with First 5 funding. A special thanks to Dr. Ingrid
Martinez-Andree's
perseverance with RIF funding!

The Brooke Foundation Donates "Read to your Bunny" to RORSD
The Brooke Foundation is donating over 500 books to
several ROR clinics in San Diego. Sites were chosen
based on donor specifications. The adorable
book "Read to your Bunny" by Rosemary Wells was
selected with half the titles in English and half
in Spanish. Michael Synder, Director and President of
the Brooke Foundation, brought books to the
Oceanside- Cassidy Health Center clinic and with the
assistance of RORSD Collaborative is personally
contacting sites and delivering books.
The Brooke Foundation is a nonprofit 501(c)
(3) public benefit corporation founded in memory of
Brooke Shannon Snyder. They strive to carry forward
Brooke's deep belief in the importance of education
for every child as the basis for self-fulfillment and a
productive future while always reflecting
Brooke's "joie de vive" in all that they do in her
name. The Brooke Foundation is dedicated to
providing literacy and educational enrichment
opportunities for young children in need.

Need a Tax Deductible Donation?
The AAP-CA3, a non-profit 501(c)3 is able to accept
book money for sites and provide a tax deductible
receipt. Sites that do not have this non-profit
status can have donors send a check to the AAP-
CA3 indicating that this money should be set aside
for a particular site. After purchasing books sites
can send us an invoice which we will deduct from
their account. Or sites can participate in bulk book
buying with the collaborative and use the money in
their account. There is no charge to sites for this
service.

6 Month Progress Report Due March 4, 2007
All sites should have received an email with your ID,
password, and notification of your 6 month progress
report coming due. March's report requires July -
December data. Site who have already sumitted their
report should be receiving their funding by the end of
the month.
These reports are crucial for ROR National to
calculate sustainability funding for all 2,900+ sites
and for continued Department of Education Federal
funding to ROR National Center to cover start up and
sustainability funding for all sites.
The 6
month report also acknowledges what your clinic has
done well, helps your clinic identify what needs
improvement, and provides your clinic with statistics
for funders.
A 6-month progress report is due after the clinic has
implemented ROR for 6 months. Funding is given after
one full year (2 progress reports submitted). Reports
are available each January and July; notice only
emailed to primary mailing contact on file with ROR
National. A paper report is available, but not
recommended. Online report is simple and best for
National. They calculate it takes 15-20 minutes to
complete.
You can also find the 6 month report by visiting
www.myror.org (new website for existing ROR sites
effective 4-26- 06; www.reachoutandread.org
remains website for media and people interested in
getting involved). Click on "Program Administration"
on first line in the center of the page. Enter site ID #
and password (found on your letter from ROR
National). If you have problems accessing or
difficulties completing online, contact:
Alison Driscoll 617 629-8042 x231
National Programs Assistant
Alis
on.Driscoll@reachoutandread.org or
Eric Belford 617 629-8042 x235
Information and Database Administrator

elford@reachoutandread.org
You can view previously submitted reports for: 9-
digit Federal Tax ID number and population served
percentages.
Send in a progress report even if you are currently
out of book money and have been unable to fulling
run ROR at your site! If you have any questions feel
free to contact Tara Milbrand with RORSD
Collaborative at (619) 281-AAP3 or tmilbrand@aapca 3.org

New Book Distribution System
During this progress reporting round, the National
Center is offering a new funding option that will
enable all sites to take advantage of joint purchasing
opportunities. Its objective is to provide a low-cost,
user friendly alternative to maximize our DOE funds
and meet the needs of our busiest doctors, nurses
and coordinators by simplifying the book selection
process and consolidating our sites' buying power.
Here's a brief description from the Progress Report:
"More Books, Less Time. Stretch your book dollars
and limit the time spent ordering! Choose this option
and allow the ROR National Center to choose and
arrange shipments of age-appropriate book
collections to your site. The ROR National Center
pays the vendor directly with sustainability funds
awarded to your site. All you do is let us know how
often to send the books. The average cost per book
for this option will be significantly less than $2.75, so
you will receive more than 25% of the books needed
for your program (based on your progress report
data). The books continue to ship until all your
sustainability funds are spent. (You may still deposit
any book funds you raise into your Scholastic Prepaid
account.)"
How it will work:
Boxes - Books will be packed according to age group.
Billing - Single statement will be sent to and paid by
the ROR National Center. The sites will not see the
money, just the books.
Schedule - Sites will choose whether to receive
books every 3 months or every 6 months, depending
on storage space and need.
Award - Instead of a dollar figure, the sites will be
awarded these pre-packaged collections. These
collections will provide them with more than 25% of
the books necessary to run their program.
