President's Message (continued from home page)
amongst children who were either not vaccinated or under 1 year of age. This news once again raised the issue of how to handle the situation when parents do not want to immunize their child. On April 22nd, during National Infant Immunization week, our local chapter will be helping sponsor another "webinar" on vaccine issues, including vaccine refusal and the law. Dr. Mark Sawyer will be leading the "webinar." Dr. Sawyer is an important member of our AAP Advisory Committee, and has recently been appointed to sit on the A.C.I.P. We congratulate him on this appointment and appreciate his help during the measles outbreak and chapter activities. As well, we are lucky to have Dr. John Bradley as an active chapter member, serving on the AAP Red Book Committee. Dr. Dean Sidelinger, our Chapter Secretary, is the current Deputy Public Health Officer for San Diego County, and was instrumental in his new role in tracking the cases and helping contain the spread of the measles infection. Please keep a look out for information, via e-mail, Coastal Currents, or on our website regarding this webinar.
More newsworthy events have contributed to the concern about vaccine safety. Many of you may have watched, read, or listened to the many television, newspaper, or radio programs regarding autism and vaccines. A number of prominent celebrities have become "spokesmen," for supporting the unproven connection. This type of celebrity advocacy only makes it more difficult for pediatricians to talk to parents about vaccines, and more difficult for parents to feel confident in immunizations, their benefit, and the role that pediatricians plan in keeping their children healthy. continued >>
